When Edgar Martinez from the Seattle Mariners couldn't run fast enough, the Subway Series finally became a historical event after a 44 year layoff. It was 49 years since two teams with New York in their names had accomplished the feat. Chompin' at the bit was the best description of my mood. Being the first to get a picture at every stop on the Subway Series route was my reporting goal. As far as I knew, no one had accomplished this feat before. Joe Dimaggio's favorite stop, The Bowery, was my starting place on the J Train. It was off to the Brooklyn Bridge stop to pay a quick tribute to the last series and hop up to Grand Central for the trip to Queens. The jaunt to Shea consists of 13 local stops and takes 25 minutes. Shea Stadium was all quiet, save for the big neon sculptures that glowed in the cool night. Willet's Point was all clean and spiffy awaiting the arrival of the marvelous Met fans. The first paper hit the stands at Grand Central with the All Aboard! headline. The 4 was still running the night local route and took 20 minutes for the pilgrimage to Yankee Stadium. The place was still aglow as the train got to the 161 Street stop. News crews from the local TV stations were already filing reports for the morning news feeds. Sautnering around the hallowed halls of Yankee Stadium you could still hear the echos of previous crowds as the Yankee's chased pennants, flags, and crowns. A quick stop for coffee at The River Candy Store at 161st and River Ave. and it was back downtown on the 4 express and a quick 6 stop 14 minute run to Union Square. Bleecker (that's bleaker to some unlucky fan base) was our humor stop for things will be bleak when this series is over. But for now it's get a token if you're a Yankee fan or a METrocard if you're a MET fan. Enjoy the fall classic!
