GORT
at Montserrat

Biography:

Josep Maria Gort, born in Reus (Catalonia), studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of St. Fernando in Madrid (Spain).

His style can be classified as figurative surrealism. The writer and critic Enric Larreula defines his work thus:

J.M.Gort presents us with a mature oeuvre, highly refined and full of beauty and mystery. It is a body of work which boldly accepts the risk and commitment of realism at the highest level, but which at the same time is filled with a very personal dreamlike interpretation. Thus, setting out from classical canons, subliminal elements from the depths of his imagination are incorporated in such a way as to create in the viewer a sensation of going beyond reality: beyond that which can be put into words.

Thus, however long one looks at Gort's pictures, one always has the sensation that something deep and mysterious is escaping us. Although one guesses that behind these figurative images and these surprising compositions, in which time and space often appear dislocated, there lies hidden an unlikely blend of ancient but at the same time modern cries for justice, rebellion and freedom.

It is a body of work which demands the right to a daring, intelligent heterodoxy.

Webbittown recently came from a lecture on the work of Vermeer, and finds some similarities of evoked expressiveness and intelligient presence in the Gort painting "Abstraccio".
